Geetings Urbana Families,

As we settle into the second quarter, I want to take a moment to thank our students, families, teachers, and staff for your continued commitment to teaching, learning, and growing together.  I also want to challenge all of us to maintain a strong focus on consistent student attendance. Let's work together to ensure that our students attend school at least 90% of the time.

Every day of classroom instruction matters, and our students cannot fully benefit from the great teaching and learning happening in our schools if they aren't there. Increasing consistent attendance is a shared responsibility between home and school, and every effort to get our students to school matters.

I often see dedicated educators, hardworking students, and supportive families who care deeply about the success of our schools. Your efforts make a difference, and they provide the foundation for the work we continue to do together.

Next Friday, October 30, the Illinois State Board of Education will release the annual Illinois School Report Card, which provides a comprehensive look at school and district performance. We know there will be successes to celebrate, along with areas where we have opportunities to grow. Data tells us where we are, but it does not define who we are or what our students are capable of achieving. It helps us to reflect on our progress, better understand our challenges, and identify where we need to focus our efforts to improve student outcomes.

I believe in the collective strength of our Urbana school community and our ability to build on what is working while addressing the challenges before us. Meaningful progress takes time, persistence, and a shared commitment to doing what is best for our young people. We will celebrate our strengths, be transparent about areas needing improvement, and stay focused on the work ahead. Our students deserve nothing less.

Thank you for your continued partnership, your belief in our students, and your commitment to helping the district succeed.

USD Aims to Improve Attendance with a School Bus Stop Shelter

The design for a new bus shelter in Ivanhoe Estates will be presented at Tuesday's Board of Education Meeting.

While construction on the shelter won't start until spring, the project is actively raising funds to make the bus shelter a reality.

Many students who live in Ivanhoe Estates take the bus to school and they do not have a place to wait for the bus protected from rain or snow. As a result, bad weather impacts school attendance among students in the neighborhood.

A generous grant from the University of Illinois's Building Beyond the Barriers program has provided more than half of the funding for the shelter.

In addition, Urbana School District has pledged $5,000 toward the project. Now we are looking for community support to reach the finish line. Those interested in supporting the bus shelter project can find more information on the Bus Shelter Fundraising Page.
