An Urbana High School math teacher has been recognized for his contriutions to math education.

Daniel Bechtel, a veteran math teacher at Urbana High School, has been awarded the Excellence in Secondary Mathematics Teaching Award from the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM). Bechtel was recognized for his deep content knowledge and his commitment to creating a classroom where every student feels welcome and engaged.

ICTM recognizes highly motivated math teachers who have demonstrated a commitment to effective classroom teaching and continued professional growth. Nominees must also be active participants in professional organizations and provide leadership and influence toward improved mathematics education.

Beyond teaching, Bechtel gives professional presentations on social justice in math and has recently been published in the Illinois Mathematics Teacher Journal.

A total of nine awards (one per category) are given by the ICTM each year.
