Thank you to everyone who participated in this week’s NAAPID (National African American Parent Involvement Day) events. Parents, guardians, and family members joined student celebrations and engagement activities in our schools, helping us build a stronger, more connected community. Many community members also joined us to read books in classrooms, share words of wisdom and encouragement, and participate in classroom learning experiences.
We appreciate your continued support of the tradition of involving parents, families, and community members in our schools during NAAPID. Please continue to support our schools' Black History Month events and assemblies throughout February to foster pride and unity.
Additionally, February also brings two important cultural observances for many Urbana families. Next week, Lunar New Year and Ramadan begin. It is important to remember that acknowledging all cultural traditions helps everyone feel seen and appreciated.
Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year, marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring. It is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in China and in Chinese communities worldwide, and it is also celebrated across many parts of Asia. Lunar New Year 2026, the Year of the Fire Horse, begins on Tuesday, February 17. Many of our families will celebrate through cultural traditions, reflection, and shared meals with friends and loved ones.
This year, Ramadan begins on the evening of Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Ramadan lasts a full month and will end with Eid al-Fitr on March 19. During Ramadan, Muslim students and staff may fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from food and water. If your student is fasting for a full or half day, please ensure their teachers are informed.
I will work with our administrators to ensure that practicing Muslim students have designated non-food spaces during lunch and that staff are aware so they can monitor physical activity, energy levels, and be mindful of the timing of stressful exams, especially in the afternoon.
It is also important for teachers to understand your child’s needs and intentions during this time. If your child has less energy or is more subdued during the school day, please let their teachers know.
Ramadan 2026 Resources
The diversity of our district and our community is what makes Urbana special. Join our school communities in recognizing that a little understanding goes a long way in ensuring all of our students feel they belong in our schools throughout the year.
In Solidarity,
Dr. Ivory-Tatum
