Tri of Administrators Approved to Lead in Urbana Schools

The Urbana Board of Education approved the appointments of Kari Surratt as the next Assistant Principal of Leal Elementary, Maria Parker as the next Assistant Principal at Dr. Williams and Kelly Crawford as the Assistant Director of Student Services.
Surratt brings more than a decade of educational experience to her new role, including the past nine years serving students at Thomas Paine in USD116. During her time in the district, she has taught second grade, served as a co-teacher and worked as a Tier 1 interventionist. Prior to joining Urbana, she taught 4th grade and 7th grade math.
Beyond the classroom, Surratt is a dedicated leader and advocate for students and families. She has served on the school’s improvement team, mentored teachers, coordinated the school garden and has served on several curriculum committees.
Parker joins Dr. Williams Elementary with more than a decade of experience in education and a passion for creating positive, student-centered learning environments.
Throughout her career, Parker has served as a teacher assistant, elementary and middle school teacher, and Dean of Students. These experiences have given her a strong foundation in instructional leadership, student support, and building a positive school culture. She is committed to partnering with teachers and families to ensure every student is supported academically, socially, and emotionally.
Crawford is returning to Urbana School District, where she brings extensive experience in special education, instructional leadership, professional learning, and student support, along with a deep commitment to creating inclusive school environments.
Crawford started her career in Urbana as a special education teacher at UMS, prior to that, she served students as a paraprofessional. During her tenure with USD116, Crawford served as resource teacher, co-teacher, Professional Development Cadre member, team facilitator, new teacher mentor, and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention trainer. She also taught Extended School Year at Gerber School. In addition, Crawford has served students and families as an Instructional Coach, Special Education Coordinator, Special Education Administrator and Assistant Director of Special Education.
