Two teachers, Renee Cooper and Pamela Van Walleghen, at Urbana Middle School were awarded a
"Museum in the Classroom" Grant from
the Illinois State Board of Education. This grant provided hardware, networking, training
and collaboration to develop on online project "Virtual Ancient Civilizations."
This project was based on the sixth grade social studies curriculum centered around the study of
Ancient Civilizations. Students created a virtual museum with a wing for each culture
they study. Students collaborated with the Museums at the Crossroads: Museum of Natural
History, Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum, William M. Staerkel Planetarium, World
Heritage Museum, Champaign County Historical Museum, The Discovery Place, Early
American Museum, and Krannert Art Museum.
