All seventh grade students are assigned to one of three instructional teams for the school year.
Each team has a teacher to teach Math, English, Social Studies, and Science with one teacher serving as Team Facilitator.

In seventh grade English the focus is on writing, speaking and grammar. Students are instructed in various forms of writing using the Write Traits program and Write Source Handbook. Emphasis is placed on learning to organize and write persuasive, descriptive and narrative paragraphs. Opportunities are also given for students to write creatively. To improve speaking skills, students are expected to give oral presentations. Grammar and spelling are taught with the expectation that students will apply these skills to the editing and revision of their writing.
Throughout the year students save their writing in the portfolio started in sixth grade. At the end of the year students review their work and select two representative pieces to be passed on to the next year's teacher. In addition, each stuent completes a checklist evaluating his/her progress as a writer.
Reading concentrates on vocabulary development, comprehension, reflective writing, highter level thinking, and study skills. Students are required to read extensively and learn to analyze and evaluate literary components in diversified selections of literature. Projects are required that enhance the readings and promote speaking and writing skills. In addition to teacher directed reading, students are required to read independently and respond in a variety of ways to what they have read. The Accleerated Reading Program offers one option to help students meet the requirements of their reading class and progress at their own pace.
Exploring Mathematics 2
The seventh grade curriculum is designed to continue and expand many of the topics studied in sixth
grade. Students become more capable with rational numbers, including negative numbers.
Applications of ratios, proportions and percents are studied. Algebra skills and notation become more
important problem solving tools.
Integrated Mathemeatics (May be substituted for Exploring Mathematics 2)
The course is for students in the seventh grade who have mastered the basic topics taught in the
Exploring Mathematics 2 course. Students in this course will be introduced to concepts in algebra,
geometry, statistics, probability and discrete mathematics. The course will emphasize
communication, problem solving and connections among mathematical topics and between
mathematice and other subject areas. Students use the text McDougal Littell: Integrated Mathematics I.
In order to provide meaningful, positive experiences for seventh grade students enrolled in Integrated
Mathematics, two of the following three criteria should be met:
Seventh graders continue a hands-on approach by using the skills of observation, prediciton, clasification, interpretation, analysis and evaluation. In life science, students study living matter, classification, simple and complex life forms, plants and plant processes. Plate tectonics, crustal warping, and changes to the earth's surface are examined in earth science. Electricity and magnetism are the main areas of study in physical science. The primary textbook used is the Glencoe McGraw Hill edition of Science Interactions Course 1.
Seventh grade students study human and physical features of the earth by learning geography through the five theme approach: location, place movement, region, and human interaction with the environment. These themes help students connect geography with history, humanities, art, and other areas of the social sciences. By making students more geographically literate, the teachers hope to encourage better understanding of the different peoples and cultures that make up our world. The units of study center on the continental regions of the world: Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, Antarctica, North America, and South America. Students complete map activities, research projects, and cultural studies for each unit. Major themes of population, resource conservation, and global interdependence are incorporated into the study of the different regions.
