Unit Concepts

• Understand the diversity and unity that characterize life.
• Identify the general functions and structures of cells.
• Explain ways living things can classified (e.g. taxonomic groups).
• Understand that for sexually reproducing organisms, a species comprises all organisms that can mate with one another to produce fertile offspring.
• Discuss evidence that supports the idea that there is unity among organisms.
• Demonstrate how organisms are classified into a heirarchy of groups and subgroups based on similarities.
• Know that reproduction is a characteristic of all living things and is essential to the continuation of a species.
• Know and identifies that hereditary information is contained in genes, located in the chromosomes of each cell.
• Understand that all organisms are composed of cells, which are fundamental units of life.
