Program Expectations and Philosophy
Cross Country competition involves a two-mile run over a course marked out on natural terrain, often in parks such as Urbana’s own Prairie Park, Lake of the Woods, Centennial Park, and Robeson Park. The team is open to all UMS students willing to attend practice and maintain good grades. We run about 12 meets each fall beginning in August and ending in mid-October.
Our UMS Girls Cross Country team set a new school best, placing 7th in the AAA (large school) IESA State Meet in 2015. Seven of our girls went on to lead a USATF team all the way to 15th at Nationals in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our Boys Cross Country team had the 2nd overall finisher at State in 2015 and are the defending Conference Champions for the East Central Illini 7. The Girls are currently the 5-time defending Conference Champs. Coach Searing is entering his 12th season with the program, 10th as head coach and Coach Maggie Byrne is entering her 3rd season with UMS CC.
Runners have the chance to qualify for the varsity boys and girls teams and then to run at the Sectional meet to try to reach the State AAA meet. It is an excellent way to get fit during the off season for other sports, to get in shape in general, or find a sport to be passionate about. Incoming students can get used to the routine of practice and make friends before adding the workload and pressure of school to their life. See you in the fall!
