PTSA News

Welcome to the start of a brand new school year.  I am Angela King, this year’s PTSA President.   We have a lot of exciting events and initiatives we are working on this year and we look forward to the support of our community in helping achieve our goals!     For more, click here.  [place remaining text only on another link…not the front of webpage…also include attachment on secondary page]

One of our big initiatives this year is boosting membership in the Parent Teacher Student Association.  We have asked for 100% PTSA membership from UMS staff this year and are quickly working towards our goal.  We have yet to set a goal for parent and student participation but we encourage all parents and students to become members regardless of their ability to volunteer.  The majority of the $5 membership dues ($4.25 to be exact) goes on to fund initiatives at the State and National level.  So if all you are able to do is become a dues paying member you are impacting our youth on a very large scale!  Membership forms and dues can be turned in at the main office.

Important Upcoming PTSA events:

On Thursday, September 6th at 5:30pm we will be gathering at Blair Park for our start of the year kickoff picnic fundraiser.  We welcome all of the Urbana Middle School community to join us for our first get together of the 2012-2013 school year.  Families can bring their own picnic dinner or purchase pizza and drinks for $1 each.  Following the picnic we will head to the school for Open House at 7pm.  The PTSA is asking for canned drink and bottled water donations for this event.  You can drop them off in the main office ahead of time or bring them directly to the picnic.

September 6th also marks the last day you can submit Fall orders for UMS spirit wear.  We will have a PTSA table at Open House to submit orders for those who have yet to do so.  See attached order form for prices and available items.

On Tuesday, September 11th at 7pm we will have our first PTSA meeting of the school year in the Band Room.  All parents, teachers and students are invited to attend.  Child care will be provided.  We will be accepting nominations from the floor for our open Vice President position.  All interested candidates please send send me an email for more information.  We will also be seeking chairs to serve one year terms for our Program, Promotion, Membership, Fundraising, Hospitality, and Council committees.  Please email me for more information.

Easy ways to fundraise for the PTSA:

If you have yet to register your Schnuck’s card through www.escrip.com please do so right away!  This is the easiest way to raise funds for UMS and registering takes only a couple of minutes.  If you would rather not register but want to contribute please just send me your name and Schnuck’s card number and we can register it for you.  Every time you shop at Scnucks swipe your card at the beginning of your transaction and Schnuck’s will donate a percentage of your purchase automatically.  There is no minimum purchase required, it does not affect your gas points, and it costs you nothing!  If you don’t have a Schnuck’s card get one for free at their customer service desk.  Invite your neighbors and friends to register their cards too!

Another easy fundraiser is our Box Tops drive.  We collect Box Tops all year so save them and have your student turn them in to their team box.  The team with the most box tops submitted will get a prize!  Each box top is worth 10 cents so if every student and staff member turns in 10 box tops we will have raised over $1000 simply by cutting a label off of products we buy!  See attached sheet for a list of products that carry the label.

We will also be doing Market Day again this year.  See attached flyer and visit www.marketday.com for further information.

“The Magic of a Moment” Reflections contest

Every year the PTA sponsors a Reflections contest to recognize students and promote the Arts.  This years theme, “The Magic of the Moment,” is open to students in pre-K through 12.  Submission categories are:  Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Musical Composition, Photography, and Visual Arts. This is a great contest for students to have their work recognized on a State and National level.  Entries will be due in early December.  More information can be found at http://www.illinoispta.org/reflections.html.
