Family and Consumer Sciences Education empowers individuals and families across the life span to
manage the challenges of living and working in a diverse global society. Our unique focus is on
families, work and their inter-relationships.
UMS Caring Kids - 6th grade - Six-Week Rotation
In this six week elective class, students will participate in activities that reinforce
the positive elements of child care.
Using a variety of creative methods, students will learn from the following
possible topics: safety (potential emergency
situations and developmental expectations); snacks (simple and nutritious age- appropriate snacks);
activity kits
(puppet shows, story telling, games, etc.); Character Counts (reinforcing the
character traits of fairness, respect,
trustworthiness, caring, responsibility, and citizenship when interacting with children); and community
service (a project directed towards a local agency serving children).

Consumer Foods - 7th grade - Semester elective
Consumer Foods is a semester course that explores foods in a variety of ways. Students
evaluate foods (convenience, snack, restaurant) in relation to
nutrition, preperation, taste and cost. Cooperative groups
examine how our multicultural society enables us to experience a variety of foods and
an ethnic smorgasbord is prepared by the students. Cultural foods are researched and a
hyperstudio presentation takes place. Catering is
expereinced in the class bakery shop. Profits from the bakery business are used for ordering a dessert at a
local restaurant while displaying proper social etiquette.
Students also prepare and serve a food for their classmates and are videotaped.

Career Connections - 8th grade - Semester elective
In this elective semester class, students will focus on a variety of areas that help to
prepare them for the
world of work. Students become entrepeneurs in a
custom food business, use computer software, interact with
guest speakers, experience a job shadow, develop
a hyperstudio presentation about the career of their choice,
learn the basics of writing a resume, completing a job application, interview
techniques and networking.

Families - 8th grade - Semester elective
The general focus of Families is to appreciate the diversity of
the family unit in a personal, cross cultural, and global way. Students
develop basic skills that help to meet those needs such as
wellness, parenting, and understanding special needs during the lafe span, including aging
and disabilities. This class is one with many projects including mediation, meal project,
bread baking and the Real Game where stuents learn to manage both their time and their
money while having a job.
