Volunteers

At Urbana Middle School we utilize parents, grandparents and other community
 members as Classroom Volunteers. The specific tasks that Classroom Volunteers do are
 fitted to the needs of the teachers and the interests and abilities of the volunteer. Common tasks include:

  • tutoring students one-on-one
  • helping students get organized
  • helping absent students catch up
  • taking notes beside student during teacher presentation
  • setting up materials for special art / science activities
  • doing clerical work, copying, covering books
  • creating bulletin boards, making games
  • teaching enrichment units
  • sharing knowledge / skills pertinent to curriculum

To become a UMS Classroom Volunteer:
  • Contact Barbara Linder
  • Fill out an  application form and release statement
  • Commit to a regular volunteering time
  • Participate in a volunteer orientation
  • Start coming to school!

Six Week Parent Training In Positive Discipline
When? Thursday evenings, February 3- March 10, 2005 7:00-8:30  p.m.
Where?  UMS CommuniyCenter
Why? Parenting is the most difficult job you will ever have!
Cost? $50 includes book, materials & childcare. Scholarships readily available.

  • Find out how to encourage your teen and yourself.
  • Grow to understand how your teen still needs you, but in different ways.
  • Learn how to get to know who your teen  really is.
  • Discover how to develop sound judgment without being judgmental.
  • Learn how to use follow-through--the only surefire way to get chores done

Tigers Den Cafe

The UMS Community Center is offering a quiet space to have a special lunch with your student during the school day.

Why? To celebrate successes, special days or just to spend time one-on-one with your child.

Where? In the UMS Community Center, West Campus.

When? During all three lunch periods (11:05-11:35 & 11:53-12:23 for 7th and 8th graders; 12:40-1:10 for 6th graders) any Tuesday or Thursday.

What's for lunch? Bring in your favorite fast food or sack lunch, or try out the cafeteria menu.
