
The Urbana Middle School Student Council is an organization for the students and administered by the students, which serves as a forum and decision-making body for student concerns and actions, and as a model of democracy in action for the student citizens.
The purpose of this organization will be the betterment of student life in school and promotion of school spirit.
Duties:
- To represent and express the views, concerns, and opinions of fellow students.
- To act as a governing agent for student activities.
- To help create and maintain an enthusiastic school spirit.
- To organize, work, and support student council activities and projects and attend as many as possible.
- To attend all student council meetings after school.
- To give effort and support to Urbana Middle School.
- To complete academic tasks given by teachers.
- To be a positive role model for others.
Officers:
President:
- Leads Meetings
- Oversees council
- Organizes special events
- Makes speeches to the student body
- Creates agenda with Vice and Secretary every week
Vice President:
- Takes over the meeting if the president is absent.
- Aides the president
- Helps organize special events
- Arranges any special meetings needed
Secretary:
- Keeps minutes of meetings and reads minutes of
past meetings
- Keeps records of events through use of project
proposal and committee report forms
- Handles any correspondence
- Thank you cards
Publicity Manager:
- Writes announcements for the school announcements
- Informs school newspaper of Student Council events
- Corresponds with local newspaper
- Coordinates publicity within the school for Student Council events
- Promotes Student Council to U.M.S students
Treasurer:
- Handles all financial affairs of Student Council
- Keeps accurate records of money earned and spent
- Keeps track of purchased items for Student Council
- Prepares and reads treasures report at every meeting
Sergeant at Arms:
- Keeps and restores order to meetings
- Assists in the counting of votes
- Evaluates and keeps track of members’ quarter fines/excuses
- Will set up point system to keep track of volunteer hours
Representatives:
Eight representatives will be elected from each grade level. Two students will be elected to be an overall represent their grade. Then one student will be elected from each elementary school district in Urbana.
Activities:
- Raise money for special UMS projects
- Run concessions for boys basketball
- Do daily announcements
- Take care of student juice/gatorade/water machines
- Purchased and maintain sign board outside
- Run book fair during parent/teacher conferences - all proceeds donated to UMS library
- Host 3 student dances per year
- Offer free 8th grade dance to all eligible 8th graders
- Run halloween candy grams/holiday grams and flower grams
- Student helpers for Registration/Open House/Graduation
- Attend and report at PTSA meetings
- Purchase and deliver Student of the Month goodie bags (100 per year)
- Baby-sit for Title I activities
- Teacher Appreciation week activities - Lunch and snack days
- Donate money to UMS clubs and organizations
