CHAMPAIGN-URBANA WEATHER

|  TODAY'S WEATHER  |   RETURN TO IHC  |

The weather in Champaign-Urbana differs each season. The temperature can get very hot or very cold, depending on the season. Deep snow, tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and at times hail and sleet accompany the changing weather. Here are summaries of the seasons and their weather.

SPRING (March - May)

Here, Spring is tornado season. If there is a tornado, a siren, TV, or radio message will inform you of the storm. If you hear the warning you should go into a basement. If you don't have a basement, you should go to a room without windows on the lowest floor. Keep a radio near by to hear further developments of the storm. It will also tell you when you can come out. Spring is also the rainy season. We have a lot of thunderstorms at this time. In Spring, you should wear pants (possibly shorts), light sweaters or sweatshirts, and t-shirts.

SUMMER (June - August)

In the summer, the temperature gets surprisingly warm, about an average of 80-90 degrees at midday. The air can also get very humid and muggy. It is also easy to get a sunburn (which is very painful) from staying out in the sun. It is a good idea to wear sunscreen while in the sun. Proper clothing will make the summer more enjoyable. We suggest the following clothes for summer: shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, sandals, swimming suits, and gym shoes.

FALL (September - November)

Fall in central Illinois is cooler. There is a mix of warm and cool days, as well as frosts. The trees here are very beautiful in fall, with red, orange, yellow, and brown leaves. Clothing for fall is relatively simple: sweatshirts, jackets, light pants or shorts, and gym shoes are recommended.

WINTER (December - February)

The Champaign-Urbana winters are pretty cold. Deep snow and blocked roads sometimes causes schools and businesses to be closed down until the snow is cleared or until you are notified. Due to the cold weather, heavy coats, snowpants (for playing in the snow or working in the snow), gloves, scarves, mittens, hats and snow boots should be worn.
