Abies veitchii
The Veitch Fir is part of the Pinaceae family. It is a conifourous
evergreen tree and is native to central and southern Japan.
The Veitch Fir is 50-75 feet tall. It is a broad conical tree
that has branches held horizontally from the main trunk. The Veitch Fir's flat
needles are 1/2-1 inch long. The needles have entire
margins and are bluish green in color. They have two prominant
white stomatal bands on the underside of the needles. The Veitch Fir's
needle's apex is notched. The fruit of the Veitch Fir is a purplish brown cone
that is two to three inches long and has a slightly tapered cyndrical shape.
The cone is attached directly by it's base to the main stem . The bark is
smooth light gray and that has resin blisters. The new stems are greenish
brown and covered in pubescence.
The Veitch Fir prefers moist,well-drained, acidic soil. They are
relatively easily transplanted .
You can identify the Veitch Fir by looking for needles that have a
notched tip, circular leaf scars, tiny black hairs on stem tip,smooth
light gray bark with resin blisters, and the tree has purple cones.
