Acer saccarum
The Sugar Maple is native in all of the states east of the Great Plains exept
the states of South Carolina, Delaware, and Florida. The name of the Sugar Maple
comes from the sugar and the syrup made from it's sap. In the fall, the leaves of the
Sugar Maple change colors from green to bright red and yellow.
Sugar Maples grown in a forest, have long trunks and a small round circle of leaves. The trunks are usually 2-3 feet in diameter. As the Sugar Maple grows,the silvery smooth bark changes to a darker brown, and has deeper cut lines in it's trunk.
Sugar Maples have 5 lobed leaves, pointed buds growing opposite from each other,
and samaras, more commonly known as heliocopters, for fruits.
