Acer saccharinum
The Silver Maple, also known as the White Maple, Soft Maple, River Maple,
and Silverleaf Maple, is one of the 60 or 70 species of the Acer family.
The leaves of the Silver Maple are green above and a silvery color below.They have an entire margin and are lobed.The bark of the tree is thin and gray. It is smooth and may be slightly tinged with brown. The twigs of the Silver Maple are green or redish color, and when they are split, they give off a foul smell. The staminate and pistillate flowers occur on the same or different trees and are all yellowish green.
When it is air dry the wood weighs 34 ponds to the cubic foot. The wood is strong, brittle and rather hard. The Silver Maple's wood is used for cheap furniture, flooring, interior finish, woodenware, veneer and fuel. The Silver Maple is planted a lot for ornamental use, noramally around the home and along roads.
The Silver Maple grows in regions from Maine and parts of Canada to northern Florida and
along the Atlantic Coast to the Midwest.
