Pinus sylvestris
The Scotch Pine is a large and beautiful evergreen tree. It is one
of the most widely grown pines in the world. In Europe, it is one
of the most important timber trees and is native to the continent.
It was brought to the United States by the English. Here, it is primarily
grown for shelterbelts, ornamental landscaping, and Christmas
trees.
It is a fast-growing tree that can reach from 50 -
75 feet high. The bark of the tree is reddish-brown and sheds
in thin, papery plates. The tree's needles come in bundles of
2 and are 1 1/2 - 3 inches long. The needles are a blueish-
green in color. The cones are about 1 - 1 1/2 inches long and
sometimes stay on the tree for many years. The branches of the
tree are spread apart sometimes making the tree look bare.
