Sassafras albidum
The Sassafras's scientific name is Sassafras albidum. The natural range is in the
eastern United States, from Maine to Florida and from Kansas to the east coast. It
is between 40 and 90 feet tall. The Sassafras lives about 700 to 1000years. The
trunk's diameter can be 4-7 feet.
The leaves can have 1, 2, or 3 lobes. They are 6 inches long and 2-4
inches wide. The leaves are green in the summer and yellow, orange, and red in autumn.
The Sassafras has greenish-yellow flowers that appear in early spring.The roots of young
trees can be dug up in the spring and used to make tea and flavorings for root beer.
