Juniperus virginiana
The Red Cedar is an evergreen aromatic tree with a narrow or spreading crown and lower
branches that droop, sometimes forming thickets. This tree can grow 40-50 feet tall.
It is used for food, wildlife habitats and windbreaks.
This tree has two types of leaves, 1 dark green, very small and scalelike; the other one often
appearing on young growth is awl-shaped. This tree grows slowly. The tree is about 16 inches
to 2 feet in diameter at the trunk and may reach 130-150 years old. The Red Cedar can live to
be 300 hundred years or more.It is a juniper rather than a true cedar.
This species of junipers was distinguished by the name virginiana because the first
botanical specimens were from the virginia colony.
