Acer plantanoides
The Norway maple is commonly seen in North America along sidewalks
or in cities, but it is actually native to Europe. It is planted in
cities because it handles industrial smoke and gases well,
and in towns because it is easy to take care of and is used for
decoration.
Norway maples are not difficult to recognize. The trees are a
stretched dome shape with a short trunk, and its height ranges
from 40-70 feet. The greenish yellow flowers at the tip of each
branch may be male or female in the same cluster. The bushels of
fruits fan out very wide, almost in straight line. The leaves range
from 2-8 inches, have 5-7 lobes, and turn yellow
before falling. The bark is tight and high-ridged. The Norway Maple is unique,
it is the only maple with petioles that excrete a milky sap when broken.
