Pinus banksiana
The Jack Pine, also known as the Banksian Pine,is of the Pine family.It is
generally considered an inferior tree, which is suggested by the name Jack. It is
dwarfed and scrubby on the outer area.
The Jack Pine can reach heights of 25-60 feet and the trunk can achieve a diameter of 8 to 20 inches. Occasionally, trees are 75-90 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 2 feet. It can live for 125-150 years of age. The Jack Pine can grow from northern Canada to Nova Scotia. It also grows naturally in a small region in the northern United States.
The needles of the Jack Pine are short and flat. They are borne in clusters near the end of the tough branches. The cones are lopsided and may retain their seeds for a number of years. The bark of the Jack Pine is a dull red-brown that consists of narrow intermeshed ridges of closely pressed scales. The Spring after the tree is 4-8 years old, it will produce bunches of yellow blossoms that bear pollen. The upper branches have bunches of dark purple flowers.
The Jack Pine is used for fuel and rough lumber. It is also used for pulpwood,
packing cases, mine timbers, and light traffic railroad ties.
