Celtis occidentalis
The Hackberry is also known as the Celtis occidentalis. It has small,
berrylike fruit. The fruit is a purplish color and is similar to a cherry. The American
Indians used these berries for grinding with dried meat. The Hackberry has slender twigs which
are sometimes called "Witches Brooms". The leaves are alternate, simple and double
toothed. They are hairy below and smooth above. The Hackberry grows 70-80
feet tall. The bark is warty, 1-1/2 inches thick, and is light brown to silvery gray
in color.The Hackberry grows from the Mississippi River
to the Rocky Mountains. It is usually found in swamplands.
