Fraxinus pennsylvanica
The Green Ash is otherwise known as Fraxinus pennslyvanica in
scientific terms. The bark is 1/2-2/3 of an inch thick and is ash gray to brown in color.
It has interlacing ridges. The Green Ash has pinnately compound, oval shaped leaves with
7 or 9 leaflets on one stem and are 10-12 inches long. The edges are usually slightly toothed. Pistilate flowers are born in clusters. They eventually
develop into winged fruits, called samaras. The Green Ash produces a hard, strong wood that
weighs about 40 pounds per cubic foot.
The Green Ash is found from Nova Scotia to eastern Alberta,
southward through central Montana and northeastern Wyoming to eastern Texas, and east
through northern Florida.
