Crabapple

Malus angustifolia

Crabapple is the name given to fruits or plants that belong to the many species of Malus, the apple genus. The flowers of the Crabapple resemble those of the cultivated apple. But the Crabapple have more slender trunks, stiffer wood, and has more spiny branches, and very acidic fruits. There are many kinds of Crabapples.

Malus coronaria, ranging from western New York to North Carolina and Missouri, a beautiful tree when in blossom in April or May.
Malus angustifolia, from southern Virginia to Florida, with fruit about 3/4-1" in diameter. Malus ioensis, from Wisconsin to Missouri, called the Prairie Crab Apple.
Malus fusca, along the Pacific coast from Alaska to California. The fruit is oblong, 1 1/2" or less in diameter.
