Abies balsamea
The balsam fir is adapted to the cold climate. In moist situations it will grow
arrow headed spires that add deep green color to the northern forests. It can grow in
altitudes from sea level to over 5600 feet. This tree grows in New England, north
across New York, the Lake States and Ontario.This tree can endure deep shade at
youth and it grows rapidly.The Balsam Fir seldom lives more than 150 years.It's needles
are narrow, shiny on the upper surface,1 inch long,and deep blue-green in color.
This fir seldomly prospers as an ornamental tree, because it is susceptible to smoke,
gases and drought.
