Guchi Domiani
Argentina
Staying with Heather Stewart's family for 6 months |
My name is Agustin Damiani and I come from
Argentina. I have been here since January 13, 2005 with
an international exchange students program called AFS
(American Field Service). I decided to make this trip
because I knew that it would be good to live in the United
States. Through daily contact with English speaking people,
I knew that I would learn more English than in my English
class in Argentina. The trip would also provide me with
an opportunity to get to know more people from around
the world.
The first few weeks were extremely difficult for me because
I missed my family, my girlfriend and my friends. I also
was not accustomed to American schools and American culture.
Everything seemed very strange to me at first; but this
is part of the experience of being in a new country and
learning a new language and culture. I know that through
this experience, I will learn a lot and at the end, it
will be great. Now, I feel much better about being here
because I have made many friends that are so nice to me
and try to help me all the time. Moreover, I have recently
started to play tennis on the Urbana Tennis Team and the
people there make me feel like I am at home.
At Urbana High School, I’m taking English, African
American History, Photography, American History, Physical
Education and Food/Meals. After school, sometimes I go
to the library to read or do my English homework until
3:00 pm. Then, I have to go to tennis practice. Because
I consider myself to be outgoing and friendly, I enjoy
going to parties and talking with people. This is something
that I do in Argentina a lot. In my country, high school
students often meet in discotheques to dance, talk and
have fun. Even though American high school students do
different things and do not have the same type of social
life that kids do in Argentina, the students here are
very friendly.
Because I am beginning to enjoy myself more, I now think
that staying only 6 months in the United States is not
enough time to learn English very well. English is a difficult
language even though I have studied it in my country for
4 years. I can communicate my ideas to others, but I still
make many mistakes when I speak. I only have a couple
months left before I return to Argentina and I know that
during that time, my English will continue to improve
thanks to my fantastic host family and the people that
I have met. I would like to thank all my teachers and
the school administrators for helping to make this experience
easier and enjoyable.
