General Commercial Sites

DISCLAIMER / NOTE: These sites are sponsored by businesses. Although there is no charge for using the information on their sites, they do want to make money from you by selling books, services, and so on. Urbana High School provides these as resources based on the information they provide. There is no endorsement of the commercial aspects of these sites.

  • College Answer is the Internet's premier guide to college admissions and financial aid. It offers advice and tools to expedite, simplify and optimize the admissions and financial aid processes. The checklists they provide are excellent and surely worth some time.

  • College Confidential.com is an excellent web resource for information on college-related topics, from Ivy League admissions to evaluating college rankings, from college books and book reviews to college counseling and paying for a university education. There are lots of ads, (the people who do the site will do college counseling for $95 per hour--a bit more than your school counselor!) but the material is well worth your time.

  • CollegeNET lets you search for institutions by geography, tuition, enrollment, and college major. It provides separate databases for four year colleges and community, technical, and junior colleges; lists of colleges by category; links to sources of financial aid information. There is no need to "create an account" or "log in" to use this site.

  • Kaplan Educational Centers, the folks famous for the test review courses, maintains a "full service" site for students. As you might expect, test prep is a strength here, but other areas such as study skills and the general college planning and financial aid are also good.

  • Peterson's Education Center will get you Peterson's college database along with financial aid, study abroad, special schools, test prep, and career information.

  • Princeton Review Online is an "everything" site. This is a company that specializes in review courses for admissions test and publishes college guides, so they do promote their goods while giving a lot of good information. You can choose college information, then go on to read their reviews of the most recent ACTs or SATs, read short articles on choosing a college, check out their college rankings, etc. A great search feature is under the "college search" section. This is a good site.

  • A company named College Visits organizes and leads group tours of colleges. These groups of high school students typically visit a number of colleges and universities in a particular geographic section of the U.S. or in one particular state. The cost includes transportation from the originating city, meals, lodging, and tours.
