- November 17, 2007 - Mix It Up Day - Pictures
The UHS Math Team competed at the Illinois Wesleyan University
Math Contest on Saturday, March 3. Five UHS students won
individual awards. They were: Marshall Jackson - third
place in the freshman division; Brian Lee - third place
in the sophomore division; Tian Xia - first place in the
sophomore division; Hee Jun Yoon - second place in the
junior division; and Sadie Gennis - first place in the
junior division. Overall, Urbana won the 9-10th grade
first place trophy and the 11-12th grade first place trophy.
Nineteen students from Urbana competed at this contest.
Many students earned outstanding scores for a solid team
showing. Congratulations to all!

A presentation of UHS curriculum information is given
to interested parents, guardians, and students. Come
learn about the UHS school day, graduation requirements,
required and elective courses, school activities,
and how to regisiter for next school year.
- Post Prom Meeting for Interested Parents
Parents interested in helping with Post Prom will
be at 7:00 pm Thursday, January 26 at the IMPE building.
We’ll meet at Member Services, Room 140 in the
Lobby of IMPE and then we’ll just go on down
to the East Gym. We will tour the facilities and meet
to discuss our plan of strategy.
- February 25, 2006 - Illinois Wesleyan Math
Contest
On February 25, the UHS Math Team traveled to Illinois
Wesleyan University to compete at the 2006 High School
Math Contest. Vincent Ahn won first place and Tian
Xia won second place in the freshman division. Samantha
Schwartz won 2nd place in the sophomore division.
Fan Huang won first place in the senior division.
Overall, the freshman-sophomore team won 1st place
in their division and the junior-senior team won second
place in their division. The team did a great job.

The national winners of the all-expenses-paid Congress-Bundestag
Year in Germany scholarships have just been announced.
We have just received news that FOUR of our UHS German
students have won the scholarship and another has
been named as Alternate to replace any of the other
students who choose not to participate in the program.
These are fantastic results, considering we had seven
UHS students in the competition.
And the winners are:

- March 17 & 18- Global Fest
Global Fest
is a school event that brings students from across
the state of Illinois to Urbana High School. The
goal is to celebrate global cultural diversity by
giving students the opportunity to experience a
variety of international activities.

JASC Tsukasa performers put on a Taiko
Drum performance for UHS students.
- Sahar Tawfiq will be visiting UHS during the
first week of April.
Sahar Tawfiq is a native and resident of Cairo. She
has a degree in Arabic language and literature from
al-Azhar University, Cairo, and had a career as teacher
and supervisor in the Egyptian school system (1975-2002)
before turning to writing and translating fulltime.
She also taught in the Saudi school system in the
1990s. She has published two novels and many short
stories in Arabic. A collection of her stories in
English, Points of the Compass, selected and translated
by Marilyn Booth, won the University of Arkansas Press
Arabic Translation Award in 1995. She also writes
children’s stories. As an English-to-Arabic
translator, she has translated academic books as well
as, recently, Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman
Warrior and Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace. She
has been a writer-in-residence at the Chateau de Lavigny
(Switzerland), and has participated in numerous conferences
on literature in the Arab world and in Copenhagen.
She was married to the sculptor Adel al-Sharqawi until
his death in 1995, and lives with her two sons in
Maadi, a suburb of Cairo.

Video Conference with Mozambique
Urbana students in some World Studies classes and
American Studies classes will participate in a live
interactive video conference with students in Mozambique
and around the U.S. Students will give short presentations
on the Civil War and Independence of their country.
Comparisons will be made between the struggles each
country faced.

Fair
Three hundred UHS sophomores attended "Red
Hot Careers for the 21st Century" on May 5,
2006. Sixty presenters from the area represented
their careers. UHS alum and WCIA news reporter,
Alexandra Harold, was the keynote speaker for the
event.

UHS students viewed a videoconference with Mozambique

High achieving students are honored for their academic

- November 17 - Gambian Griot and Kora Player
On November 17th, during 8th period, Mr. Foday Musa
Suso, a Gambian griot and kora player will be performing
in our auditorium. This is one of our long series of
programs made possible by the Spurlock Museum and the
International High School Innitiative. More.
- March 4 - Video Conference with Sri Lankan students
Students at UHS observed a live video conference between
New York high school students at Asia Society in New York
City and students in Colombo, Sri Lanka. New York and
Sri Lanka students asked and answered questions related
to the December 26,2004 tsunami. As the many locations
for the conference were being connected, UHS students
saw pictures of Sri Lanka and heard facts and stories
about the disaster. The conference was organized by Global

- March 7 - 11 Harmony Week
Student Senate hosts as annual event called Harmony
Week. For one week out of every school year Senate
attempts to unify the student body through various activities.
These activities will include discussion groups over controversial
topics, performing group skits, passing out green ribbons
for student and faculty to wear, playing songs in the
hallways during passing period and reading inspirational
quotes over the announcements.
March 10 - Auditorium, 8th period
Gayle Ross, a nationally known Cherokee story teller,
presented a program to classes in the auditorium. She
is a great-great-great-granddaughter of John Ross, a principal
chief of the Cherokee during the Trail of Tears. Gayle
Ross learned traditional Cherokee stories from her grandmother.

Self, tuba player - Concert with the UHS Concert Band &
UHS Wind Ensemble
Jim Self is a free lance musician. He has performed
solos in many major motion films including Jurassic
Park, Home Alone I&II, Hook, and Lemony Snicket.
He holds principal tuba positions with the Pacific Symphony,
the Pasadena Symphony, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra,
the Los Angeles Music Center Opera and the Opera Pacific.

& Lifestyle
This spring the PTSA will again be sponsoring programs
before the
regular business meeting. We've titled this series, Personal
Growth &
Lifestyle, a continuing series of programs on topics relevant
to
building a stronger high school community. Please mark
your calendar for
the upcoming March 14th program on Leadership which will
be presented by
Jon Bowermaster of the University's Human Resource Education
Department.

- March 18-19 - GlobalFest
GlobalFest
is a school event that brings students from across the
state of Illinois to Urbana High School. The goal is to
celebrate global cultural diversity by giving students
the opportunity to experience a variety of international
activities.
- April 1 - Asia Night
Asia Night is
a celebration of Asian traditions and foods. UHS students
perform Asian dances and stories after a buffet dinner
of Asian foods.
- April 9 - Oxfam Banquet
The annual Oxfam Banquet,
sponsored by the UHS Student Senate and Students for
World Improvement, is held each year in the spring.
The evening is an experiencial look at the problem of
world hunger designed to raise awareness about the gravity
of the issue. Live music and speakers provide entertainment
and food for thought. Proceeds from the event go to
Oxfam International which helps to alleviate world hunger.
- April 30 - Prom - Step Into
the Roaring Twenties
Prom was held
at the Chancellor Hotel. Students entered between
two vintage cars into the ballroom decorated with
pictures from the twenties. A silent movie set the
scene as people danced, sat at tables, or had their
pictures taken. Prom

- May 1 - Post Prom - Survivor - Tiger Island
Post Prom was sponsored by parents of the Junior Class
and included a variety of activities, FOOD, entertainment,
and more FOOD, all in the brand-new, state-of-the-art
GYM I facility at IMPE.
Students enjoyed playing Texas Hold 'em (yes, of course
for prizes!), shooting hoops, playing video games, thumping
a volleyball, navigating giant inflatables, smashing
a ping pong paddle...and just chatting with friends.

- August 1, 2005 - Urbana Alumni Golf Outing
The Urbana Alumni Golf Outing
is one of many functions the Alumni Association holds
throughout the year to raise money for the 116 School
District. Since 1996 the Alumni Association has raised
over $600,000 which went to fund in whole or in part
the track, football field renovations, computers, weight
room equipment, math and music programs, assisting all
booster clubs, and provided other needed equipment where
funds have not been available. The annual golf outing
is open to all, not just alumni, and is open to all
levels of players. We offer 2 shotguns, morning and
afternoon, (see attached) and lunch is provided.
Hole sponsors are also welcome as well as prize donations
(see attached). Call 398-0090 and ask for Jerry or email
uhsalumnigolf@shout.net for a registration form or more
info. Cost is $75.00 per entry which includes green
fees, golf cart and lunch.

- January 9 - PTSA Program
Two Family Medicine Resident Physicians from Carle
Foundation Hospital will speak at the January 9 meeting
on the topic of adolescent health and wellness. Dr.
Hussam Almasri will talk about healthy lifestyle,
and Dr. Nazneen Hashmi will talk about common health
problems and their prevention, both from the primary
care perspective. Each physician will talk for 20
minutes, and then there will be a 20 minute question
and answer period.
