Outreach Program

The UHS Community Outreach Worker works with the Truant Alternative Optional Educational Plan (TAOEP). TAOEP is a grant founded program to help families who may have students who are at risk or are currently truant.

Families have used the districts Outreach Worker for housing issues, setting up meeting with other district personnel, getting information on programs throughout Champaign/Urbana, and a variety of other concerns. The Outreach Worker is the families’ personal link to the school as well as other services the family may need help with.

Most schools in the district have an Outreach Worker. Each Outreach Worker is responsible for the following items:

Home Visits – Outreach Workers have the flexibility to leave the building to work with parents on needs for school or for their home life.
Maintain a Case Load – The Outreach Worker will maintain a case load of student who they will meet with on a regular basis. All students on the case load must meet TAOEP truancy guidelines.
Establish Community Relationships – The Outreach Worker tries to establish working relationships with community agencies that may be of use to the families. These agencies may include The Urban League, Regional Office of Education (ROE), District Attorneys Office, Parkland, First Call for Help, Best Interest For Children, C-U Public Heath, Job Core, and other such agencies.
Homeless Referral – If a family is experiencing housing issues, the Outreach Worker will fill out the appropriate forms, submit them to Central Office and make sure ROE is aware of the housing situation. While the Deputy Superintendent for the district is the official Homeless Liaison, the Outreach Worker for the building will ensure that the student has the information they need on where to receive services and information to assist them. The Outreach Worker is responsible in directing students to in-house services such as how to obtain school supplies, who they need to talk with to get help with school work as well as help with referrals to outside agencies.
Transportation – On occasion the Outreach Worker can provide transportation for a students and their family. Some examples would be to come to parent/teacher conference and to make appointments that related directly to their TOAEP case such as court appointments.
Attendance Letter and Truant Officer Request – The Outreach Worker is responsible for reporting to ROE when a student has been absence from school in accordance to the Compulsive Attendance Laws. A Truant Officer Request goes out after 5, 10, 15 and 20 full day absences (four or more classes in one day are considered absent for the day.) ROE also requires that the school send out a letter to the parent informing them of their students’ attendance. After 14 absences a student is referred to the Abolish Chronic Truancy Program (A.C.T.) After 20 absences, a petition is formulated for the student
School Representative – The schools Outreach Worker is the school representative in all truancy related court cases.
