Course Descriptions:
ART 1
One semester, one credit
Art 1 is designed to introduce students to all kinds of art.
Students will gain insights into the art works produced by
artists and create
their own art works using a variety of techniques and media
including pencil, pen and ink, tempera paint, and clay. Students
will
learn to recognize and use the visual elements of art such
as line, shape, form, value, color, space, texture, and movement.
Students
will also learn about art from a variety of different cultures,
time periods and styles.
ART 2
One semester, one credit
Prerequisite: Enrollment in this course is based upon portfolio
review by the UHS Art Department. Juniors and Seniors who
do not have a
portfolio are encouraged to speak to the Art instructors.
Art 2 is a continuation of Art 1, and introduces the students
to the principles of design; the ways artists put the visual
elements
(learned in Art 1) together to make a picture or sculpture.
Students will be introduced to various 2-D and 3-D media and
techniques such as drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and clay.
Students will learn the skills and vocabulary for interpreting
and
judging art works, including art from various time periods,
cultures, and styles.
ACCELERATED ART 1-2
One semester, one credit
Prerequisite: Enrollment in this course is based upon portfolio
review by the UHS Art Department. Juniors and Seniors who
do
not have a portfolio are encouraged to speak to the Art instructors.
Accelerated Art 1-2 is for highly motivated students who desire
an accelerated pace and a higher degree of challenge in art.
Students who pass this class are allowed to move directly
to Art 3 level courses because it combines the content of
Art 1 and Art 2
into one semester. Students will gain insights into art works
produced by artists as well as create their own works using
a variety
of techniques and media such as pencil, pen and ink, tempera
paint, clay, and printmaking. Students will learn to use and
see the
elements and principles of art in their own work and work
from a variety of different artists, cultures, time periods,
and styles.
Students will also learn the skills and vocabulary for formally
criticizing a work of art.
ART 3 DRAWING
One semester, one credit
Prerequisite: Art 1 and Art 2
Students will build on the skills they learned in Art 1 and
Art 2 including the design elements and principles. Students
will be
introduced to various artists and cultures from a large variety
of time periods. They will develop their skills in various
drawing
media such as pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, crayon, chalk,
and color pencil.
ART 3 PAINTING
One semester, one credit
Prerequisite: Art 1 and Art 2
Students will use various forms of medium to build on the
skills learned in Art 1 and Art 2 including design elements
and
principles. Students will be introduced to various artists
and cultures from a large variety of time periods.
ART 3 3-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN
One semester, one credit
Prerequisite: Art 1 and Art 2.
Students in 3-Dimensional Design will build on the principles
and elements of design they learned in Art 1 and Art 2 and
work in a
variety of art media such as clay, plaster, and wire. Students
will be introduced to various artists and cultures from a
large variety
of time periods.
*AP STUDIO ART - DRAWING
One year, two credits
Prerequisite: 2 high school level art classes including Art
3 Drawing
Enrollment in this course is based on portfolio review by
the UHS Art Department. The AP program in Studio Art is for
highly
motivated students who are seriously interested in the study
of art and involves significant commitment. It is highly recommended
that AP Studio Art students have taken as many art courses
at the high school level as possible in their schedule. Students
will need to work outside the classroom, as well as in it,
and beyond scheduled periods. The AP Studio Art curriculum
is available on line at www.apcentral.collegeboard.com and
will be strictly adhered to. Students who opt to take AP Studio
Art will be required to complete 4 art projects during the
summer prior to enrollment. The list of projects to select
from can be picked up from either the art teachers or from
the counseling office and is also available at www.moodle.usd116.org
in the AP Studio Art course listing. These projects will be
turned in within 5 days of the start of the course and will
be part of the first quarter grade. There will be an extra
fee to cover the cost of film for the slide portfolios.

PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS
One semester, one credit
Prerequisite: One semester of high school art: Juniors and
Seniors will be exempt from prerequisite
This is a general survey course covering technical, historical,
and aesthetic aspects of black and white photography. Lab
activities will include picture taking, film developing, and
beginning darkroom techniques. This course will emphasize
the operation of an adjustable SLR camera. Several cameras
are available for student use. Black and white film will be
provided. Students will also be introduced to digital imagery,
and basic Adobe Photoshop software.
ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS
One semester, one credit
Prerequisite: Photographic Arts
Students will continue to be introduced to historic and aesthetic
aspects of photography, as well as advanced black and white
photographic techniques, including long exposures, hand coloring,
tinting, double exposures, and digital imagery manipulation.
Students will learn basic Microsoft PowerPoint Software and
will create a portfolio presentation of their work.
MULTIMEDIA AND WEBSITE CREATIONS
One semester, one credit
Prerequisite: Sophomore English or concurrent enrollment in
American Studies
This is a course for students who are interested in learning
to use various software to create a complex website on the
computer. With an emphasis on design, the course will include
navigation, fonts, colors, graphics, animation, visual theme
and style, and overall project appearance. Students will be
introduced to various software including Adobe Photoshop,
Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash, as well as peripheral equipment
including scanners and digital cameras.

One semester, one credit
Prerequisite: Sophomore English or concurrent enrollment in
American Studies
This is a course for students who are interested in learning
to use various software to create a complex website on the
computer. With an emphasis on design, the course will include

WEIGHTED OPTION
The weighted option is available for the following courses.

Art (3-Dimensional Design) Advanced Photographic Arts
The weighted option course content will include all expectations
of the above classes as well as additional requirements. These
courses will meet the same hour as the regular course. Writing
and sketchbooks will be done outside of class. Students must
enroll for weighted art within the first ten days of each
semester.
ANY ART LEVEL 3 COURSE CAN BE REPEATED FOR CREDIT
WITH CONSENT OF THE INSTRUCTOR.
