National Honor Society selects students for membership based
on four principles: scholarship, leadership, service, and
character. At UHS, only juniors and seniors may be members.
The initial criterion is scholarship. After first semester,
juniors and seniors (not inducted as juniors) who have a cumulative
GPA of 4.50 are eligible for membership. In addition, students
must have 20 verifiable hours of service by second semester
of their junior year. A student who meets this definition
is invited to apply for membership by filling out a form that
demonstrates his or her leadership and service qualifications.
This form must be signed by one of the student’s teachers,
one of the student’s activity sponsors, and the student’s
parent/guardian and be approved by his or her counselor, dean,
and the NHS adviser. If all these criteria are met, the student
is invited to become a member of National Honor Society. New
members are inducted in a ceremony at Honors Night in May.
During this program as well, continuing NHS members are recognized
and many students are presented awards and scholarships by
faculty, departments, clubs, and community individuals and
organizations. In order to maintain membership, students are
expected to participate in service activities during their
senior year. UHS’ chapter of NHS provides opportunities
for service though a peer tutoring program and by helping
at registration.
Honors Night is May 12, 2008.
