Welcome to Urbana Early Childhood School

Early Childhood Students

The Urbana School District #116 Early Childhood Program staff is committed to providing a quality, individualized learning program for eligible preschool children. The classroom activities focus on a concern for the child's total development including communication, cognitive, physical and emotional development. Children in the classroom grow through play and through interactions with each other. Play interactions and environments are designed to foster chidren's initiative and independent learning. The activities and environments reflect developmental levels and natural interests of children.

The Early Childhood classroom provides services for children ages 3-5. Children attend school 2½ hours daily. Morning and afternoon sessions are available and school busses transport children to and from school.

Children enrolled in Early Childhood Education at Urbana Early Childhood School have been identified through a screening and asssesment process as needing either Special Education Services or Preschool Readiness Experience.

Children enrolled at UECS who are not eligible for Special Education Services must meet the Illinois criteria for at risk families. All of our classes have 15 students each with one teacher and one teacher assistant forming the core teaching team. In addition, an occupational therapist, speech therapist, social worker, parent coordinator and physical therapist work with the classroom team.

Did you miss Kindergarten Connection?

May 6th, 2014

Kindergarten Connection at the Urbana Civic Center on April 8th was a success! We had 184 families attend this first step into kindergarten!

If you missed the Kindergarten Connection and your child will be entering Kindergarten in one of Urbana’s neighborhood elementary schools this fall, you are encouraged to go to your child’s school to begin the sign-up process. If you are unsure of what neighborhood elementary school your child would attend, please check on the Elementary Attendance Areas page. If you are unable to determine the school or have additional questions, you may contact the Office of Curriculum and Instruction, at 217-384-3651, to verify a specific address.

At the school, you, the parent or legal guardian, will complete the registration forms, sign-up your student for an August kindergarten screening, and receive a handbook with information about Urbana’s kindergarten classes and how to ensure success for your child.

Each neighborhood elementary school has set aside time between now and the end of the school year (June 4th) for parents who missed Kindergarten Connection but still need to start the registration process.
