11 July 1857 - Subject - Management of Negroes

Father said fairness, justness and moderation in all things were the fundamental requisites. Inspire a negro with perfect confidence in you, learn him to look to you for support and he is your slave. A full belly quells dissension and rebellion, but too full a one breeds inordinate laziness. So in clothing give sufficient to protect from weather but give neither of too fine stuff, nor too abundant. Never work a negro systematically all he can do. Leave a reserve for emergencies. Their religious training must be of the most moderate sort, avoiding all excitement. Persuasion should substitute severe punishment in getting work done as much as possible.
