ADVANCED PLACEMENT BIOLOGY
SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS SUMMER 2008
Dear Prospective AP Biology
Student,
Welcome to AP
Biology! The program has high
expectations and no time to waste. Therefore, to ensure your success in this
program and on the AP exam in May, we need to start right away. The following is a list of required
assignments to do over the summer:
I. I look forward to working with you this
upcoming school year. If you have any
questions, email me at broy@usd116.org.
II. Pick up your
textbook as soon as possible, and start reading chapters one through five, and
sections 8.4 and 8.5.
a. You will need to prepare handwritten sentence outlines of chapters 1, 3, and 4. Enclosed is a handout to help with the
outline structure.
b. For
chapters 2 and 5, construct handwritten concepts
maps. See the backside of this handout
for a list of vocabulary words that must be incorporated into your concept
maps. For help with concept mapping, you
can visit the following web sties:
http://classes.aces.uiuc.edu/ACES100/Mind/CMap.html
http://users.edte.utwente.nl/lanzing/cm_home.htm
c. You will need to write out the
definitions for the attached vocabulary list for chapters 1-5 and chapter
8. These may be typed on a word
processor.
III. Write a report on the
book The Hot Zone by Richard Preston (ISN
# 9780385479561)
I am certain that Pages for All Ages can
order the book for you. The cost is
$8.00. It may be available on line at
Amazon. Go to www.amazon.com. Do not wait until the end of the summer to
buy and read this book.
The report should include:
*An in-depth summary of the book
(use your own words).
*A discussion of the major scientific
concepts covered.
*A discussion of your opinions
about the book.
*An excellent writing style that
uses simple language to express ideas.
c. The report must be word-processed,
double-spaced, one inch margins on all sides, using 12 font. I will not read any reports that are longer
than 5 pages.
All of the above assignments are due on the first day of class (August
29th). No late work will be accepted.
IV. Purchase an AP
review guide such as Cliff’s from your local bookstore. This is highly
recommended, but not mandatory. This
will help you to prepare for the AP test, which consists of 100 multiple-choice
questions and 4 essay questions.
Use the
following word lists to generate the concept maps for chapters 2 and 5. All words on each list must be used. Feel free to add extra words. You will need to write a brief explanation
that summarizes how all of your words are connected.
