Urbana Alumni Association Awards Spring Grants to Secondary Teachers
Over $7,000 Awarded
The Urbana Alumni Association (UAA) has a commitment to giving back to District 116. Over the years, the UAA has awarded over $600,000 in grants to high school and middle school teachers for classroom projects. This spring, the UAA awarded over $7,000 in grants.
The grant recipients are:
“We are Urbana alums and parents who want to help our great secondary schools be even better. Our efforts are devoted to supporting programs and facilities that cannot be fully funded through our strapped school budgets,” says Tina Gunsalus of the Urbana Alumni Association. She adds, “There are some great programs this semester. We're excited about all of them.”
Gunsalus says it is always hard to narrow down the number of applicants. She explains, “In each round (Spring and Fall), we receive quality proposals from teachers devoted to improving offerings to our students. Our first thought is usually that we want to fund them all; since we usually cannot do that, our seven board members take the time to do our research. We review how many students each project will affect, interview principals about each request, and look for others to share in the funding. Our awards are designed to provide an incentive to groups to do fundraising of their own, and our usual policy is to match funds they've already raised or on track to raise.”
