Urbana High School Graduates Class of 2009
Commencement Ceremony Held May 24
The members of Urbana High School Class of 2009 are now alumni. The Class of ’09 graduated during the commencement ceremony held at the U of I Assembly Hall on May 24, 2009, among pomp, pageantry, and school district officials attending.
The ceremony began with opening remarks by UHS Principal, Dr. Laura Taylor. The Class of ’09 marched into Assembly Hall to Pomp and Circumstance, played by the UHS Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Tamra Gingold. The UHS Honors Choir, under direction of Angelica Franklin, performed our National Anthem. The Honors Choir (soloist Yolanda Adams) then sang I Believe.
The graduates enjoyed the keynote address from Ella Masar, UHS Class of 2004. Masar is currently a professional soccer player, after a distinguished playing career at the U of I and UHS. Masar told students her determination to succeed in soccer can translate into all walks of life.
Senior Class President, Bryan Shoda, presented the graduation address. He reminisced about his school career and noted all the changes that each student undergoes in their academic career.
Dr. Taylor then presented the Class of 2009 to District 116 Superintendent, Dr. Preston L., Williams, Junior. Dr. Williams accepted the graduates, and each graduate stepped onto the platform to receive their diploma. Shoda then performed his final act as Senior Class President as he led his follow graduates in switching the tassels on their caps, signifying that they are now graduates of Urbana High School.
After closing remarks by Dr. Taylor, the graduates left Assembly Hall to Calypso Jam, performed by the UHS Chamber Orchestra.
