Superintendent's Message

Superintendent WilliamsDear Students, Families and Friends,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the voters of Champaign County and especially the voters within the City of Urbana who voted in favor of the 1% Sales Tax for Facilities for Public Schools. The list of individuals who worked tirelessly for this referendum’s passage is way too long for this brief article, but please accept my deepest thanks on behalf of the children of Champaign County.

I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce our community to two new school board members for Urbana School District #116 - Ms. Peggy Patten and Ms. Elaine Gehrmann. I look forward to working with both of these board members for the betterment of our district. Mr. Mark Netter and Ms. Cope Cumpston retired from the school board after giving tremendous service and time to this community in their roles as school board members.

We are also gearing up for an incredibly busy summer for our maintenance department as we continue our efforts to upgrade and refresh our elementary buildings. This summer the focus will be squarely on Prairie Elementary School as we refurbish about two thirds of the building. We will also remodel the libraries at Thomas Paine Elementary School and Wiley Elementary School. There will also be extensive work on installing energy efficient lighting and working on other building improvement measures throughout the district. We have a very ambitious summer planned for the district, and we ask for your patience and understanding as we continue to upgrade our facilities.
