Martin Luther King Elementary Students Donate to Worthy Causes
The students and staff at Martin Luther King, Jr., Elementary School spent the month of April collecting money to donate to the local Habitat for Humanity and for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The school raised $2,510 to be split between the two groups.
Bryan Lake’s second grade class and Sarah Carls’ first grade class helped count the donations that came into the school. The class that brought in the most money received a spaghetti party and the runner-up classes enjoyed a popcorn party. Lake notes that since the school exceeded the $2,000 goal, each student won a door prize.
“The kids had a lot of fun (with the drive), especially counting the money. My kids would go out and get the boxes and some days we’d weigh the boxes to see which one was the heaviest, and other days we’d see which box had the most nickels, dimes or pennies, so we got to do a lot of math,” Lake says.
Lake continues, “Most importantly they’re learning about helping others. Sometimes we get stuck being selfish and it’s good to see the kids getting this involved and this excited about doing something for someone other than themselves.”
The King students will get another bonus. The Habitat for Humanity house will be built near King School, so the students will be able to see the fruits of their donations first-hand.
