Classroom Rules & Expectations |
| |
The following are my classroom rules and expectations. All students were given a printed
version of these expectations during the first week of school. You will need Adobe
Reader to view the printed version. If you have any questions, please contact
me. |

Beginning Class |
| |
You are expected to be in your assigned seat when the bell begins to ring. Pencil sharpening,
supply borrowing, and conversing should be completed prior to the bell. When the bell rings, check to see if there
is an assignment on the overhead. If there is an assignment, begin working silently at your desk. Otherwise, wait
quietly for me to begin class. (Back to index) |
| |
| |
Supplies Required Each Day |
| |
You should bring your textbook to class every day unless otherwise instructed. You will also
need a notebook with paper to take notes and a writing utensil with dark ink (no red, magenta, or pink ink will
be allowed). Do not take out a calculator unless instructed to do so. (Back to
index) |
| |
| |
Backpacks and Other Books |
| |
There is not a lot of extra space in this classroom. Therefore, I ask that you keep all backpacks
and other books stored under your desk and out of the aisle. Unless we are done for the period and you are given
special permission, you will not be allowed to work on homework from other classes. If you are caught doing work
from other classes, I will take the work and you can obtain it from me after class. If this begins to be a frequent
problem, there may be additional consequences. (Back to index) |

Talking During Class & Discussions |
| |
You are expected to participate in all class discussions. We will be discussing many interesting
and sometime controversial topics, and it will be important to have a variety of perspectives and ideas. If you
would like to share something with the class, raise your hand and wait to be called on. This will allow everyone
to be involved. Please be respectful of your classmates when they are talking, and do not hold a private conversation
or interrupt a classmate. Additionally, under no circumstances will I tolerate personal attacks. Remember, you
can be much more effective by refuting someone’s argument with logic and evidence. Finally, do not hold
private conversations while I am talking. If you have a question, raise it to the entire class so that everyone
can benefit from the answer. In my classroom, no question is a stupid question. (Back

| |
| |
The End of the Period |
| |
Every student must be sitting in his/her assigned seat when the bell rings. No one will be
allowed to line up at the door. Do not leave until I dismiss the class. (Back
to index) |
| |
| |
Pass Policy |
| |
At the beginning of each quarter, you will receive two passes. You may use these passes at
most any time to go to the restroom. You will not be allowed to use a pass for any other purpose, unless there
is a legitimate emergency. If you do not use your passes, you can turn them in at the end of the quarter for extra
credit. If you lose your passes, they will not be replaced. (Back to index) |
| |
| |
Food & Drink Policy |
| |
No food is allowed in class, unless you have special permission from me. Water in a re-closeable
container, such as a water bottle, will be allowed. No candy sales will be permitted during the period. (Back
to index) |
| |
| |
Tardy Policy |
| |
If you are not in your seat when the bell begins to ring, you are tardy. This applies to students
who arrived in class early and left to use the restroom. You will be allowed three “free” tardies
(less than 5 minutes) each quarter. On the 4th and all subsequent tardies, you will receive a referral to the
dean. (Back to index) |
| |
| |
Lab Equipment & Safety |
| |
The materials we will be using in the laboratory are expensive, and can be dangerous if used
incorrectly. Therefore, never touch any piece of lab equipment unless instructed to do so by me. The same rules
apply to the computers in the classroom. (Back to index) |
| |
| |
Tornado & Fire Drill Procedures |
| |
In the event of a tornado or fire drill, leave your belongings in the room and follow my instructions.
The drill procedures are posted in the classroom. (Back to index) |

Assignments, Grades, Late Work, & Extra Credit |
| |
Assignment Appearance/Quality: Please turn in assignments that are legible and written
in dark ink. Do not use red or magenta pen, as that is what I use to grade. If I cannot read your answer I will
assume it is incorrect. |
| |
| |
Grades: Your grade will be determined by your performance on homework, classwork,
projects, labs, quizzes, and tests. I grade on the following scale: |
| |
| |
Grade |
Percentage |
A |
89.5% or above |
B |
79.5-89.4% |
C |
69.5-79.4% |
D |
59.5-69.4% |
F |
59.4% or below |
I will post grades by student ID number in the classroom every Monday. Once
a month, I will provide printed grade reports to every student. If you are receiving a D or an F, you will
need to have your grade report signed by a parent or guardian and returned to me. You may also email me
at any time to have a grade report sent to you via email, as long as I have your email address on file. |
| |
| |
I will do my best to return tests and assignments back to you quickly to ensure that your grade
is up to date. |
| |
| |
Late work: Any work not turned in when it is called for is late unless prior arrangements
have been made with me. Late work can be turned in up to a day late for 1/2 credit. No excuses, such as printer
problems, will be accepted. |
| |
| |
Extra Credit: Occasionally there will be opportunities for extra credit. Any extra
credit assignments must be turned in when they are called for to receive any credit. (Back
to index) |
| |
| |
Cheating |
| |
My goal is for all students in my class to learn. When you copy a classmate’s paper,
or allow a classmate to copy yours, you are robbing yourself (or your classmate) of the opportunity to learn.
Therefore, there will be consequences in both instances. |
| |
| |
Homework and Labs: Unless otherwise stated, you will be allowed to work with a partner
on homework and lab assignments. However, each student should put the answers in his/her own words. If I see that
two papers are exactly the same, I will consider it cheating. The two papers will receive one grade and the students
can decide how to divide the grade between them. If the students cannot reach a decision, the points will be divided
evenly between them. |
| |
| |
Papers, Quizzes, & Tests: If you are caught plagiarizing or cheating
on a quiz or test, the following consequences will occur: |
| |
| |
- Both papers will receive a zero.
- In order for either student to re-take the test or re-write the paper, the student who copied must come
forward. That student’s parents will be called, and the student will be allowed to re-do the assignment
for 1/2 credit.
- The student who knowingly (or unknowingly) shared his/her paper will be allowed to re-do the assignment
for 80% credit.
| |
| |
I value taking responsibility for one’s actions, and will therefore “reward”
a student for admitting that he/she cheated by allowing him/her to earn back some of the points. However, if a
student is caught cheating multiple times, there may be more severe consequences. (Back
to index) |
| |
| |
Absences |
| |
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and make up your work—I
will not remind you. I will try to keep my web site (http://www.usd116.org/apalla)
up to date, and you will often be able to access notes and assignments there. Do not ask me for missed work or
handouts once the beginning bell has rung, or during class instruction. Make up work is due within five school
days of your absence. (Example: If you were absent on a Friday, your make up work is due the following Friday.)
Any work turned in after that time will not receive credit. If you are absent more that one day, see me to make
any other arrangements. (Back to index) |

| |
Extra Help |
| |
If you need extra help beyond what I am able to provide in class, please make an appointment
to come and see me. With advance notice, I can be available before school, during lunch (4th hour), or after school
(beginning in November). (Back to index) |

Mrs. Palla's Classroom Rules |
| |
- Follow all school rules
- Follow my classroom expectations
- Respect all property and people in the class
- Do not speak when someone else is speaking
- No personal grooming (including, but not limited to, applying makeup and brushing hair)

Consequences |
| |
The following are general consequences, which may be modified to fit the situation: |
| |
| |
- 1st offense: Verbal warning
- 2nd offense: 15-minute detention
- 3rd offense: Referral to the dean
| |
| |
If your behaviors are severe (fighting, insubordination, etc), you may be sent directly to
the dean on the first offense. I also reserve the right to contact a parent/guardian if I believe such contact
is warranted. |
| |
| |
Detentions must be served with me before school within 3 days. If the detention is not served
within 3 days, it will be doubled to a 30-minute detention. Failure to serve a 30-minute detention will result
in a referral to the dean. (Back to index) |
