LIFE AFTER LOSS WORKSHOPS*

The PAS group offers this series of classes for free as a community service.  However, due to rising costs

and decreasing adult education funds, participants are charged $5.00 per class to offset the costs of printing, postage and staff time to publicize and manage registration for these classes. 

Park in the lot north of University, between 4th and 5th.

Entrance from parking lot leads to Wellness Room.

 

ESTATE PLANNING BASICS - Dan Holder (CPA, Attorney, U of I lecturer) will discuss basic estate planning including current estate tax laws, benefits of living trust, necessity for a will, creation of marital and family trusts, how assets should be titled, gifting, treatment of IRA and pension accounts and elections available to beneficiaries and treatment of life insurance, pour-over wills, the need for property and health care powers of attorney, life insurance trusts and the living will.  Class meets Feb. 3.

POST-MORTEM ESTATE ISSUES - Dan Holder (CPA, Attorney, U of I lecturer) will discuss various tax issues regarding estates and survivors including required tax returns and due dates thereof, filing status, issues relating to cost basis of assets received from a decedent, rules regarding required minimum distributions from IRAs and pension accounts, disclaimers and the tax treatment of life insurance proceeds.  Class meets Feb. 10.

LONG TERM CARE AND SOLUTIONS - Thomas L. Frey (U of I Professor Emeritus) will lead the workshop which will develop a perspective of Long Term Care relative to what is covered by Medicare and typical medical institutions.  Home Health Care, Assisted Living, Adult Day Care and Nursing Homes are alternative locations for such care.  Long Term Care Insurance will be covered, including a variety of considerations such as daily and total benefits, length of coverage, elimination period, inflation protection, qualifying for benefits under a policy, as well as qualifying for insurance if you need such coverage.  Class meets Feb. 17.

NEW!  CREATING A HEALTHY FINANCIAL FUTURE - Kathy Sweedler (Uof I Extension educator) will lead a workshop that helps people determine where they are now with their finances, plan for where they would like to be and take steps to get there.  During the workshop she will share several websites that have interactive elements that let people put their plan into action.  Class meets Feb. 25.

NEW!  A SURVIVOR’S GUIDE TO HEALTH AND INSURANCE ISSUES - Richard Perry (Perry and Associates) will lead a workshop on the collection of life and health insurance benefits.  He will briefly discuss the process of filing claims under life insurance plans.  The workshop will also explore the handling of the decedent’s medical claims and billings.  Finally, Richard will discuss health insurance options for family members who might be in need of coverage going forward.  Class meets Mar. 10.

CLEARING THE CLUTTER - Kathy Sweedler (U of I Extension educator) will lead a workshop on developing a personalized plan to simplify your life by clearing the clutter.  Kathy will talk about how to reduce paper and clutter, easily locate those important notes and phone numbers and create storage systems that work.  She will also talk about tips to simplify your finances.  Class meets Mar. 18.
