The Urbana Adult Education Program is offered through Urbana School District 116 and exists to support the lifelong learning needs of our community. Urbana Adult Education provides lifelong learning opportunities to persons 17 years of age and over who reside in Urbana, Champaign, and surrounding communities. Basic Education classes are funded through state and federal grants. Our Community Education classes are funded through tuition and fees.

Basic Education

Anyone 17 years or older who is not enrolled in a regular school program in Urbana, Champaign, or in neighboring communities may enroll. You may begin at any time and continue until you have reached your educational goals. Daytime and evening classes are available Fall and Spring semesters. These classes are FREE! The John M. Garth Adult Education Center is located in downtown Urbana within two blocks of the Courthouse MTD Bus Stop. Call 384-3530 for an appointment to register.

Basic Education classes can help complete the requirements for a GED (General Educational Development) or a high school diploma. Classes are tailored to students’ individualized learning needs, and the following courses are also available: Basic Reading Improvement, Basic Math Improvement, Computer Education (Introduction to Computers, Keyboarding, Microsoft Office XP Suite, Windows XP files and folders, Photo Editing/Photoshop, Word Processing, and General Office Skills), and Certified Nursing Assistant.

Community Education

Community Education courses are available to anyone in Urbana, Champaign, and the surrounding communities who is 16 years of age or older. High school students are admitted by special arrangement. Courses range from one-night seminars to twelve-week classes. Courses include such topics as cooking, foreign language study, specific computer software, various crafts, etc. The current Community Education catalog is available here. Course fees are established at the lowest possible rate to insure availability to as many people as possible. Early Registration and Lifelong Learner Discounts available. Register by phone at 384-3530 using your MasterCard or Visa. Registration in person and through the mail also available.

We're always looking for people to share their talents with the community. Do you have an interesting hobby or skill you'd like to teach others? No teaching degree required, just the enthusiasm to share it with others. Give us a call and we'll talk!! Volunteer Opportunities

In addition to our regular teaching staff, we benefit from the expertise of a dedicated group of volunteers. These volunteers work with students on an individual and small group basis. If helping someone learn to read, earn their GED Certificate, or improve their English and math skills sounds rewarding to you, please call our office at 384-3530.
