Lesson 5:

Memorial Stadium and Charles Bowen Busey are linked.  Students will learn the reason for the building of the University of Illinois Memorial Stadium while viewing a clip of a video. The book, The Story of the Stadium lists Charles Bowen Busey as one of the killed veterans. His son, Charles Bowen Busey Jr. was only three years old at the time. The Busey family tree will be expanded.

Procedures: (2-3 days)

á     Hand out a copy of LitBuseyLineage and LitBuseyLineage2 to groups of students. Ask students to expand the Busey family tree by either writing in or taping the information from the new handout into Worksheet: The Busey Family Lineage, lesson 3.

á     Ask the following questions: how many generations of Buseys do we now have? Since Sandra Louise Busey, today known as Sandy Busey-Isaacs, is still alive, could we still add more names to the lineage? Her children, for example, or grandchildren?

á     Show the video clip MemorialStadium-Busey.

á     Ask the following questions:   Why was Memorial Stadium built? How was the building of Memorial Stadium funded? How do the BuseyÕs feature in the stadiums history?

á     Hand out a copy of StadiumDonationReceipt and StadiumDonationThankYou. What do these two sheets represent?

á     Hand out WWIUIUCdead. Who are all the people listed on this page?

á     Finally, show a picture of Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska. This too is a college stadium built in memory of WWI alumni who died during the war.
