Point out where the three states are on a map – an 1830 map if you have one.  Ask if any of the children have traveled to any of those states and ask them to describe the ones they know about.  Ask if they have been to any of the sites regarding Lincoln.

Explain a one-room schoolhouse to the children – all children went to school in one building.  Younger children sat in the front and moved back a row for each age.  Children brought their lunches in a pail.  Only went to school for a few months a year – when they were not needed on the farm.  Teacher could not be married and stayed for a week at a time with each of the families so the parents and the teacher were friends.

Pioneer – One of the first people to settle a new place.

Put the words on your word wall.  You could put them in a different color on your already existent word wall or create an Abraham Lincoln Word Wall.
