Lesson 6: Sharing the Outcome

The judge decided on July 31, 1962 that the schools were not racially segregated, but merely imbalanced as neighborhood schools tend to be, thus legal. There was an appeal and then another more official report filed regarding the school system in Chicago . This report highlighted some key questions regarding race that were not answered in the first set of documents in the case files.

Objective: The students will be able to form an opinion based on the outcome of the case.

Materials:
Judges decision file
Appeal 1 file
Appeal 2 file
Report 1964
Feb1965
Appendix pg. 4

1.  Have the students share the materials by way of mock trial.

2.  One of the students can be the Judge, the other can be the lawyer wanting an appeal, someone else the report finder/writer, and then finally a mock school board meeting on February 1965.

3.  The students can decide on another outcome on the case, but they need to use evidence from the report or other related documents to back up their argument.
