Lesson 1: Defining Vocabulary

Vocabulary was a big problem in this case, because neither party wanted to agree on an accurate definition for the differences and similarities between segregation and racial imbalance. In the document provided in this lesson, the students can see a portion of the argument over the terms.

Objective: Students should be able to understand the meaning of vocabulary involved in the case to distinguish and compare terms throughout the lessons.

Materials:  Paper divided into 4 squares, Crayons and/or other art supplies, Case Samples (Appendix pg. 3)

Vocabulary Words: Plaintiff, Defendant, Equality, Equity, Racial Imbalance

Have the kids identify the words using a dictionary, and then complete the graphic organizer determining the antonym, synonyms and other examples of the words.
