The Urbana High School Concert Band Awards night concert was held on Monday, May 21, 2007. It was a banner year for Urbana Bands! 

The following awards were presented to deserving students:

Merit Award
In recognition of outstanding contributions, leadership and service to the school instrumental music program: Christina Byrne, Sam Caragher, Melissa Shore, Joleen Su and Lily Wilcock

Musicianship Award
In recognition of outstanding musicianship and distinguished musical contributions: Austin Powell and Oliver Swann

Dan Perrino Urbana Bands Education Fund Scholarships
Amber Choquette, Kameron LeShoure, Sarah Mustered, Ben Valocchi and Lacey Palmer of the UHS Symphonic Band

Louis Armstrong Jazz Award
Lily Wilcock

John Philip Sousa Award
In recognition of outstanding achievement and interest in instrumental music, for singular merit in loyalty and cooperation and for displaying those high qualities of conduct that school instrumental music requires: Tad Boehmer

Outstanding Senior Awards
Lucy Barnes, Tad Boehmer, Christina Byrne, Alex Chin and Lily Wilcock

Lions Club Award
The trophy is given and maintained by the Urbana Lions Club and a scholarship of $100 is given by the Champaign Lions Club: Lucy Barnes

Additional Awards

As well as these awards, the Urbana Band Department had an award-winning year. Accomplishments for the group as a whole and individual students marked a most successful year.

The Urbana Bands are under the direction of Darren Hicks, USD #116 Music Coordinator and Mark Day. Mr. Hicks directs the Concert Band while Mr. Day directs the Tiger Marching Band, the Jazz Bands and the Symphonic Band.

At the May 15, 2007 Board of Education meeting, a representative from the Champaign-Urbana Schools Foundation announced the group would donate $13,743.50 in grants to the following Urbana teachers for the fiscal year of 2008.

Last Day of School - Fri., June 1

Because of snow days used this year, the last official day of school for the Urbana School District is Friday, June 1, 2007.

UMS 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony - May 31

The Urbana Middle School's 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 31 at 9:30 a.m. in the UMS Gymnasium. A reception will follow in the cafetorium.

This ceremony is not designated as a graduation, but it is a recognition and promotion program.

UHS graduation - Sun., May 27

The Commencement Ceremony for the Urbana High School graduating class of 2007 will be on Sunday, May 27 at 3 p.m. at the Assembly Hall.

UHS Jazz Showcase / Chili Dinner

The Urbana High School Music Department presents the UHS Jazz Showcase this Friday evening, May 18, in the UHS Commons/Cafeteria.

The Chili Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. to be followed by the Jazz Concert at 7 p.m. featuring the UHS Jazz Bands I and II. Tickets are $5.00.

Thomas Paine Science Fair

The students of Thomas Paine Elementary, 1801 James Cherry, invite you to attend their Annual Science Fair on Friday, May 18 from 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. in the Thomas Paine Gym.

Carnival Day at Washington Early Childhood

12 Noon - 2 p.m.
Washington Early Childhood Education Center, 1102 North Broadway

Come to Carnival Day at Washington Early Childhood. Enjoy games, prizes, food, raffles and activities! Tickets will sell for one quarter each. This activity is the key fund raising effort for the Early Childhood Center. Thanks to several local businesses who are sponsoring rooms and activities by making donations of cash or goods. Proceeds will be used for playground improvements.
