Urbana Aquatic Center temporarily closed - UPDATE
[original story posted 7/26/06, was updated 8/1/06 and 8/7/06; the following story was posted 8/7/06-9/1/06]
The Urbana Park District and Urbana School District are working as swiftly as possible to reopen the Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center after a recent roof fire on July 24. All the repairs that are under the control of the two districts have either already taken place or are nearly complete.
In the fire, the Pool Pak - the specialized unit that heats and cools the facility and circulates air - was damaged. A Pool Pak consultant from the Chicago area has already conducted an investigation of the damage.
Due to insurance requirements, a report from a second independent Pool Pak consultant must be obtained. We hope to have that person on site by Tuesday, August 8. Their report will likely take several days to complete and send.
Once the districts have both reports in hand, we will know the extent of the damage, and whether the damage warrants repair or replacement of the unit. And we will have a firmer estimate on a reopening timeline.
All UIAC activities have been moved to Crystal Lake Pool until further notice. Pass holders should bring their UIAC passes to Crystal Lake Pool for admission.
For more information, call 217-367-1544 or visit the Urbana Park District website.
The Urbana Park District and Urbana School District 116 joined together to build the Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center. The Aquatic Center is used by the schools, club swim teams, and is available for use by all members of the community.

Urbana Aquatic Center temporarily closed
[original story posted 7/26/06 - 8/1/06; the following updated story posted 8/1/06 - 8/7/06; see the current updated story from the district's homepage]
On Monday, July 24, a fire damaged the roof of the Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center. Fortunately, no one was injured, as the fire took place when the facility was closed to the public for annual maintenance. The roof repair is already complete. However, the mechanical systems that filter the air in the facility suffered smoke damage. Complete assessment of the damage is still pending.
All UIAC activities have been moved to Crystal Lake Pool through at least August 5. Crystal Lake Pool lap swim hours will be extended to mirror those of UIAC: M-F 6-8 a.m. and 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Pass holders should expect separate notification by mail about an extension to make up for the time the UIAC is closed. For more information, call 217-367-1544 or visit the the Urbana Park District website.
