Chris Moyer, UHS Distinguished Alum for 2006

Christopher Moyer, Urbana High School Class of 1957, has been chosen to receive this year's Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation Distinguished Alumni Award, representing UHS. Retiring as associate dean from the University of Illinois College of Fine Arts and Applied Arts School of Architecture, Professor Moyer now serves the Rafiki Foundation, designing and constructing orphanages throughout Africa. We salute Chris Moyer for his leadership and influence on numerous UI students, and for his generosity to thousands of African children.
The luncheon to honor Chris Moyer, and Champaign alum jazz musician Cecil Bridgewater, is May 5 at the Hawthorne Suites in Champaign. Please call the Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation, 217-351-7512, for tickets.

UHS Band off to the Big Apple!

The Urbana High School Concert Band and Wind Ensemble leave UHS on March 21 for performances in New York City and Washington, DC. The 80+ students and chaperones will travel by motor coach and will get to see the sights of the two cities as well. Their performances are Friday, March 24, at Lincoln Center Alice Tully Hall and at the Lincoln Memorial in our nation's capital on Saturday, March 25. UMS teacher Kevin Erlinger wins IMSA award

Congratulations to Urbana Middle School science teacher Kevin Erlinger who was awarded the 2006 Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy Award of Excellence. The award is given in recognition of educators who have most challenged, inspired and supported the Academy's students prior to enrollment in the IMSA. Erlinger was nominated by former student Jenny Tang and honored by the Academy on March 17. He has been an Urbana teacher for 17 years.
UHS ACT scores among top in state

Urbana High School's Class of 2006 is among the state's top performers on the ACT exam. The UHS ACT composite score was 23.7, placing them above the state composite average of 20.3. New Trier Township High School in Northfield had the highest ACT composite in Illinois, with 26.8.

Thank you, Urbana Alumni Association! During your 2/21 visit to the Urbana School Board meeting, you awarded the following to our schools:
- $2,875 to purchase track apparel for the UHS boys' and girls' track teams
- $1,000 for the UHS 2006 Student Senate Thanksgiving dinner
- $400 to assist four UHS Math Club students who have been invited to join the Rose Hulman Institute of Technology Team competition in the ARML mathematics 2006 spring contest
- $8,000 to purchase an amplifier as part of a project improve the sound system in the UMS gymnasium
- $1,470 to purchase a projector mount, projector screen, wall mount enclosure security cabinet, speaker wires, and equipment to complete the high-tech level electronic media set-up for the UMS multi-purpose room
- $1,400 for the UMS Robotics Tournament

YWCA honors Urbana's own

At the annual YWCA Black Women's Achievement Dinner on February 18, three women from Urbana Schools were honored.
UHS Senior Jennifer Cook won the Young Achiever Award. UHS Social Worker Grace Mitchell was presented with the Trailblazer Award. Retiring UHS Assistant Principal Polly Washington won the Unsung Achiever Award.
Congratulations to all three ladies for this well-deserved recognition!
