The Urbana School District extends our congratulations and deep gratitude to Urbana School Board Vice President John Dimit upon his reception of the 2006 Vocational Achievement Award from the Urbana Rotary Club. District Superintendent Gene Amberg wrote Dimit’s nomination, and supporting letters were submitted by Champaign County Board Chair Barbara Wysocki as well as UI Law Professor and former USD School Board President Tina Gunsalus.

Dimit, who heads the Regional Planning Commission, has dedicated himself to improving the quality of life for our community.

His service to our community extends beyond his work with the Regional Planning Commission. Dimit has been an elected member of the Urbana School Board of Education for almost 20 years. During that time, he has served as both President and Vice President. He has served on the Board this many years because of his belief and support of teachers, children and community.

John Dimit has been an Explorer (Boy Scouts of America) troop leader for decades, even before he became a parent himself, showing his commitment to leadership and service as a role model for adolescents.

Amberg said, “I have never known John to not bring out the best in people - whether they are county employees, Head Start workers, school district staff or even the nervous young child who is placed in the public spotlight by presenting his artwork to the school board each spring.”
